At the edge of the forest, when dry leaves crunch like they’re applauding, this brownie appears in his bold blue jacket and enormous shoes that look like little bread boats. He carries a broom in his hand, but don’t be fooled: he sweeps his own way, spinning whirlwinds so the mist can “breathe” prettily between the trunks.
His hat, made from a sock rescued from a previous life, ends in a tiny bell that gives him away right when he’s about to cause mischief. He’s absolutely obsessed with leaving the ground spotless and, at the same time, tucking little clues among the leaves, like the path itself were a secret game for curious-eyed little ones.
- He sweeps in zigzags to hear how every stone sounds different
- He makes animal-shaped piles… then breaks them up again, laughing
- He keeps “important” twigs as if they were medals
When no one’s watching, he sits on the moss, gives the bell a shake, and waits for a child to laugh nearby, he says that laugh is the only compass that never gets it wrong.
