What it means
Borrowed from Afrikaans, meaning nice, great, or enjoyable. One of the most beloved South African words and it gets slapped onto everything from food to weather to vibes. Say something is lekker and everyone knows exactly what you mean. It has a warmth to it that a plain English word could never quite match, and South Africans use it without thinking twice.
Usage examples
"Ag man, this vetkoek is lekker. Chuck me another one before the cousins get here and finish the whole pot"
"We had such a lekker day at the beach, braai going, kids in the water, not one worry until the wind picked up and chased us home."
Where it comes from
It comes from Afrikaans, which got it from Dutch, where lekker has always meant tasty or pleasant. South Africans took it and ran, stretching it way past food to cover the weather, a holiday, a song, basically anything that feels good. That warmth is baked right in, which is why a plain nice never quite pulls off the same job.
