Street voices
"John can mean almost anything, but most commonly refers to an object or thing. For example, hey, did you see the basketball game? That was a crazy ending. Yes, I watched that John last night. I can't believe the Knicks lost in overtime."
What it means
A do-it-all placeholder noun for basically anything: a thing, a person, a place, an idea, even a whole situation. If you can point at it or think it, it can be a jawn. Itβs famously Philly slang, rooted in local Black English, and itβs popped up in NYC speech too, especially among people with Philly ties. Context does all the heavy lifting.
Usage examples
"Yo, where that jawn at? Grab the blue one by the bodega door, not the busted jawn on the stoop, aight."
"Pass me that jawn on the counter, no, the other jawn, the one we used to fix the bike last weekend."
Where it comes from
Traces back to joint in 1980s hip-hop, which Philadelphia softened into jawn and then stretched to cover absolutely anything. The city kept it as a one-word Swiss army knife of a noun.
