What it means
Acting like the protagonist of a movie, as if the whole world revolves around you and your drama. Can be used admiringly when someone owns the moment, or mockingly when someone is being way too theatrical about something that does not warrant it. Gen Z turned this into everyday vocabulary straight from TikTok culture.
Usage examples
"She walked in with sunglasses on, ordered the most complicated coffee ever, and just stood there radiating main character energy"
"She put on a whole playlist and stared out the train window like the credits were about to roll, total main character moment."
"Stop with the main character act, it is a group project, not your solo album."
Where it comes from
Bubbled up from TikTok around 2020, where people filmed themselves romanticising their own lives like the lead in a coming of age film. Main character energy was meant as a self love nudge, but it quickly flipped into a gentle dig at anyone treating a coffee run like an Oscar scene.
