"Who died and made you boss? Something said in reply to someone trying to order you around or tell you what to do despite having no established authority over you. All right, let's get this group project going. I'm going to do some research on wind energy, and you try to do the same for hydraulic energy, and also try to get a slide going, okay? Whoa, who died and made you boss?"

What it means

A snarky comeback for when someone starts acting like they run the place even though nobody handed them the crown. You throw it out when a friend, classmate, or random loudmouth gets bossy without any actual authority. It has perfect eye roll flavour, like saying calm down, chief, you are not the manager of the universe.

Usage examples

"Bro, you picked the playlist once and now you are assigning jobs at the barbecue? Who died and made you boss, chill out a sec."
"She started handing out chores the second she arrived, and her brother just raised an eyebrow and asked who died and made you boss."
Tone
Ironic Dismissive
Where it is said

Where it comes from

A snappy jab built on the idea that authority usually passes on when someone dies. Thrown at a sudden bossy streak, it asks where on earth that crown came from.

Voices of the people

Theory is all well and good... but what we Magikitos really love is hearing humans in their natural flow. That's why we collect voice notes that people send us on WhatsApp, recording themselves using the expression with a real, street-level example!
