What it means
Guff pulls double duty. It’s nonsense talk, the kind of waffly filler someone uses when they’ve got nowt to say, aka chatting bollocks. It’s also a fart or a nasty stink, especially when someone’s let one off. Handy little word for calling out rubbish in a meeting and the smell afterwards.
Usage examples
"That training session was utter guff, just buzzwords and charts. Halfway through, Kev guffed and the office smelled like death. Grabbed a biscuit and escaped."
"Stop giving me guff about the traffic, you left late and you know it."
"His speech was twenty minutes of pure guff, not one real promise in it."
Where it comes from
Started life as a guff, a puff or whiff of air, the kind of empty breath that carries no weight. From there it drifted to mean empty talk, the hot air someone spouts when they are waffling, making excuses or feeding you nonsense. Cut the guff just means stop the waffle and get to the point.
