What it means

A light-hearted Aussie insult for a bloke who’s being a bit thick, hopeless, or just had a massive brain fade. Usually said with a grin, it’s more eye-roll than hate, like calling someone a drongo or a galah. Gets lobbed at mates and siblings when they’ve done something spectacularly silly.

Usage examples

"He tried cracking a tin of beans with a screwdriver, then whinged when it sprayed the kitchen. Absolute boofhead, the can opener’s been in the drawer forever."
"He reversed the trailer straight into the only pole in an empty car park. What a boofhead, we still bring it up at every barbie."

Where it is said

Where it comes from

It goes back to the old English buffle-head, a word for a fool, and it got a big boost from a 1940s Australian newspaper comic strip called Boofhead, whose hero was lovably dim. Australians kept the affection in it, which is why it lands more like a nudge in the ribs than a real knock.

Voices of the people

Theory is all well and good... but what we Magikitos really love is hearing humans in their natural flow. That's why we collect voice notes that people send us on WhatsApp, recording themselves using the expression with a real, street-level example!
