What it means
To draw the short straw means you’re the unlucky sod picked for the worst job or the rough end of the deal, usually after some supposedly fair random choice. Think pulling straws, shortest one loses. You’ll hear it when everyone’s dodging chores, awkward shifts, or any task that stinks of responsibility.
Usage examples
"Who’s on loo duty? Of course I’ve drawn the short straw again. Everyone’s legged it, and I’m left with Dettol, rubber gloves, and a face like thunder."
"I drew the short straw and got stuck doing the night shift over the holidays while everyone else was off."
"Someone has to tell the boss the bad news, and guess who drew the short straw, yours truly."
Where it comes from
From the old way of deciding who gets the worst job: everyone draws a straw from a hidden bunch, and whoever pulls out the shortest is stuck with it. To draw the short straw is to be the unlucky one landed with the chore nobody else wanted, fair and square but rotten luck.
