What it means
A toerag is that person who walks into a room and instantly sours the vibe — a low-life, a scumbag, someone you wouldn’t trust with a borrowed pen. It’s the word you mutter when they cut you off in traffic or swindle a mate. The label sticks like cheap gum to a shoe, painting them as thoroughly useless and morally ragged, a human-shaped puddle of disappointment.

Where it comes from
This one’s got a grimly literal past: originally, a toe-rag was a cloth wrapped around the foot in the 19th century, especially by vagrants or prisoners who couldn’t afford socks. Over time, the term slid from the rag to the person wearing it — a low, ragged character. By the 20th century, it had fully morphed into a general insult for a worthless or contemptible oaf.
