What it means
To work the room is to make the rounds at a party, reception, or work thing, chatting to loads of people instead of camping with the same little gang all night. It's that smiley lap where you do the quick hello, swap a bit of chat, and make people feel noticed. Can be smooth and charming, or a bit schmoozy if someone's clearly on the hustle.

Where it comes from
This one’s been around in US English since at least the mid 20th century, especially in showbiz, politics, and sales. It started with the literal idea of moving around a room, greeting people one by one, keeping the energy warm, then widened into everyday speech for anyone who’s good at circulating and charming a crowd.
