What it means
A dramatic way to say absolutely no, you're not doing that and you definitely don't want to be seen there, in it, or anywhere near it. It's pure over-the-top refusal, usually about clothes, places, events, or anything you find embarrassing, naff, or beneath you. It sounds blunt, funny, and a bit judgy on purpose.

Where it comes from
This phrase has been around in English since at least the late 1800s. It grew out of the older idea of saying you wouldn't be found somewhere even in death, which cranks refusal up to theatrical levels. The joke is the exaggeration itself, and that's what kept it alive in everyday speech.
