What it means
Smol is a deliberately cutesy way of writing small, used for things so tiny and adorable that the normal spelling feels too cold for them. A kitten, a baby shoe, a single tiny mushroom, all profoundly smol.
Usage examples
"Look at the smol paws on this puppy, I cannot cope."
"They gave me the smollest slice of cake you have ever seen."
"That hedgehog is so smol it's basically a pocket blessing."
"Why's my iced coffee smol today, who robbed my cup?"
Where it comes from
Smol grew out of internet meme culture in the mid 2010s as a baby-talk spelling of small. It took off in fandom spaces, Tumblr posts, cute animal captions, and reaction memes, where people used it to make tiny things sound extra soft, sweet, and emotionally squishable.
